Instructor: Yiannis Rizomarkos

An ancient island at the crossroads of civilizations awaits us to discover it. In this 6-day photographic voyage we will stroll through the wild beauty of Sicily and capture the Sicilian and stone forged lifestyle, aiming for authentic experiences outside of the beaten track.
Throughout our carefully planned adventure we will be driven by a private van, assisted by local guides while staying exclusively at carefully selected beautiful local lodgings, far from touristy grounds. So we will travel from city to city, from mountains to the sea and from the influences of the ancient world to modern Italian fun. We will stroll through the labyrinthine straits of Taormina and Catania, conquer the active volcano of Etna, enjoy the Mediterranean delights of traditional villages and experience the grandeur of history in the eternal city of Syracuse. Arabian palaces and volcanic landscapes, ancient monuments and cathedrals, passionate cities and deafening quiet medieval villages will offer us the contrasts that create great images. Continuously photographing under the constant guidance of Yiannis, each traveler will create their own photographic footprint of an unforgettable travel experience.
Our journey begins from the coastal Taormina city of Thousand Conquerors, where Greek, Arabic and Spanish influences create a magical architectural landscape over the blue coast. Kamari town the ancient Greek amphitheater with breathtaking views of Etna and the open sea. From there we will be transported to the villages of Savoca and Forza D’Agrò, the true set of the movie “The Godfather”. We will see in front of our eyes the archetypal Sicilian moments as we live the Corleone atmosphere of dark bars and medieval trails.
On the third day our course is literally up. We head to Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano and climb almost as high as 3300m by cable car, 4×4 vehicle and hiking. With the necessary equipment and guidance from an experienced climber-driver we will photograph the volcanic space landscape roaring beneath our feet. But since the contrasts never stop on this journey, we then arrive in Catania, the local capital of eastern Sicily, to leave at staggering rates. From traditional fishing markets to the secret bars to the secret arcades, this city has given us countless human moments and exciting photography experiences.
As we approach the end of the trek the rates go down as the grandeur of the scenery shocks travelers. The picturesque villages of Ragusa and Marzamemi will give us a taste of traditional Sicilian life. At the top of a steep cliff one, stopped in time by the second fishing village, gives us the opportunity to enter the daily lives of communities living in ancient temples and codes and to enjoy the local delights of volcanic soil and rich sea. The trip then wraps up for a day in historic Syracuse, where the past comes alive at every turn and photographic opportunities appear in every marble-lined square and picturesque alley.
We are ready to photograph the Mediterranean adventure prepared by the millennia of history, the volcanic ash and the soul of the Sicilians.
The trip is aimed at anyone, regardless of photographic level, beginners with basic technical knowledge but also more experienced photographers who want to get a strong travel portfolio. Participants should have a laptop with them for editing images.
